My 'brother' visiting in Helsinki
Oh my it has been a while once more... But for good reasons! Even though I had my well deserved one week off from work last week, I had plenty of stuff to do. For example my brother from another mother (and father), Druss came over for a visit.
I picked him up on Saturday (not last, but the one before) from the train station and after a short detour we brought his stuff to my place and went to the 'ELMU:n Kansanjuhlat'-festival in Alppilapuisto. We hung out there in the sun, listening to some good and some bad bands playing on the small stage. Just before the Finnish Ska band ‘The Capital Beat’ stopped playing we took off to go to Petteri’s graduation/birthday party somewhere in the east of Helsinki. We managed to get a bit lost because we didn’t understand the directions well enough, but a friendly Finnish lady prevented us from entering a military area and pointed us in the right direction. When we arrived there, pretty late, the party was already shutting down. We still had some good times and beers before going back home via the Hesburger (fast-food, 24h drive-in) in my neighborhood.
On Sunday we took it a bit slow with a pizza breakfast. The weather was steaming and the hangover, oh well the hangover was there too. We decided to go play some ultimate (Frisbee), before watching the World Cup finals between the Nethies and Spain. We didn’t get the latest memo and were not familiar about the two hour delay of the start of the game. So we ended up throwing a disc around for an hour or so and went to the beach/sea after that to cool down. When we got back, we could join in the game. Luckily the game was mostly played in the shade of the big trees around the park area; otherwise it wouldn’t have lasted long. After a good and intensive session; we went back to the beach/sea to refresh.
The hunger level arose, so we went into the city center to grab a bite before going to the bar to watch the game. The bar wasn’t crowded and the couchsurfers with who we also played the ultimate game were there as well. The game on the big screen was nice, but I guess I don’t have to mention anymore that Spain won the game and we got back home disappointed even though we expected that to happen already before the game started. With heart rates close to a peak, it’s a miracle I didn’t get a heart attack or nervous breakdown during the game. Krista came back home from the Ruisrock festival in Turku, where she volunteered as a security person, on Sunday evening.
And the next day (Monday), the three of us went on our way to the cottage in Nuuksio. It was about an hour hike from the bus stop. On our way to the cottage we saw my first viper/adder alive in nature, and the weather remained to be hellish, therefore I was sweating like a pig.
We arrived to the cottage, yes the same one as last December, so no running water nor electricity. This meant that the wood for the sauna and dinner had to be sawn and chopped. I took the sawing part for my account, where Druss relieved himself with the axe. When the preparations of our stay were made it was time to relax and have a skinny dip in the lake and a hot wooden-stoked sauna. All that stuff makes a person hungry so we went to the public grill place and prepared some sausages and porridge pasta (where it should have been just pasta).
On Tuesday we went to collect some blueberries while having a small hike around the Nuuksio lake, before we went hiking back to the bus stop. We had a little stop at the Ikea on our way back home, to buy some stuff. And in the evening we watched the movie ‘office space’. And went to the docks in the neighborhood for a relaxing and cool (at least cooler than our apartment) time.
Wednesday the last day of Druss’s stay we went to the city center to do some shopping and see Krista’s godmother's son play in the Helsinki Cup tournament on Kamppi square. The day continued to go to the Asian/Oriental supermarkets in Kallio to buy some ingredients for the evening meal. I made my 'almost famous wok' dish with delicious sweat beans, bean sprouts, chicken, bell pepper, mushrooms, oyster sauce, sesame oil and what not with some noodles. Yummie, I’m getting hungry only by thinking about it.
On Thursday, when I woke up, my 'brother' has left the apartment already and was on his way back home, leaving somewhere in the night. The rest of the day Krista and I spend time together and relaxed a bit. Krista had fallen ill after she got back from the festival and is coughing her lungs out. The doctor prescribed some drugs but no recovery so far, unfortunately. *sob sob*. I had to pack my stuff in the evening because I had Ilosaarirock 2010 in Joensuu planned.
But I will write about Ilosaarirock 2010 in my next blog, which I will write one of these days. I also will upload some of the photo's of Druss's visit and the festival soon. So watch this page closely the upcoming days. More to come! For now; Have fun, stay healthy and stay safe! Peace!
